The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC), in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) delivered a two-day virtual conference on “Contemporary Literacy on Anti-Corruption.” The event was opened by His Excellency Dr Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at ROLACC and was moderated by Mr. Alex Mejia, Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social Inclusion. Panelists included experts and practitioners from Asia, Europe, MENA region, Africa, and the Americas, who were representing various International Organizations, Non Governmental Organizations, private entities, and academic institutions.
The lack of literacy on contemporary issues related to anti-corruption plays an important role in the proliferation of corrupt acts, especially in regard to the ‘Five Alarms’ raised by the United Nations Secretary General in 2022, these being; challenges coming from COVID19; the global financial system; climate change; lawlessness of cybersecurity; as well as peace and security. In this regard, strengthening capacities can be positive to mitigate causes and effects through a better understanding of opportunities.
This conference focuses on these 5 alarms, and seeks to provide a platform for discussion, knowledge exchange, and comparison of case studies. It follows from the success of ROLACC and UNITAR in developing learning tools focused on Anticorruption and its links with Human Rights, Sustainable Development and Technologies, that have trained hundreds of persons from all regions.
The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center is an international center operating in support of the United Nations. It provides several training courses and conferences in cooperation with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and other bodies, and is also the secretariat of the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award. The Center also provides tailored training courses for international delegations from the MENA region, and has hosted a number of high-level conferences. The center is the founder of a number of academic initiatives including the Arab Anti-Corruption Academic Initiative and works closely with academic institutions around the world to promote anti-corruption education.
UNITAR is a United Nations autonomous body with the mission of developing the individual, institutional and organizational capacities of countries and other UN stakeholders through high quality learning solutions and related knowledge products and services to enhance decision-making and to support country-level action for overcoming global challenges. The Institute, in partnership with ROLACC and different actors, has developed tools to combatting corruption from the capacity building perspective, bearing in mind the impact of mainstreaming knowledge as a powerful approach to raise awareness, empower people, as well as fostering positive mindsets for transforming lives and moving forward from
theory to practice.
