The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) Organizes an Open Day for Applicants to the LLM Masters in Corruption, Law and Governance.
The University of Sussex and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) held an Open Evening for the LLM in Corruption, Law and Governance for students interested in the course.
A large number of interested students gathered in Doha attended to hear details about the course, and listen to Sussex University professors who spoke about the importance of education in combating corruption.
The programme, delivered by the University of Sussex in Doha in collaboration with ROLACC, aims to educate graduates in recognising corruption in its many forms and what causes it, with the ultimate aim of fostering long-term change in the region.
The event, held at the Shangri-La Hotel on Thursday, 16th February, came in the wake of the successful opening of the first course of study for a Master’s Degree under the auspices of the Prime Minister; His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani in October of last year.
The University’s Director of the LLM, Professor Richard Vogler, Professor of Comparative Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, said: “This was a very important event and was well attended.”
He added: “The understanding of the many reasons for corruption is the most important step in dealing with the disastrous effects that corruption can pose on communities around the world. Only by estimating how and why corruption happens, experts can then begin to develop governance structures that will deal effectively with corrupt practices and prevent them from forming in the first place.”
Dr. Dimitris Ziouvas, Lecturer in Criminal Law, gave a short lecture on ‘Global Commodity in Exchange for Global Corruption: the Impact of Corruption on the United Nations’ goals of Sustainable Development’.
The part-time, two year Law masters is taught by leading Sussex academics who specialise in global corruption. At present the inaugural students enrolled on the course are from a variety of professional backgrounds including the legal sector, banking and finance, international relations, journalism and education. It includes a number of nationalities, in addition to Qataris, Gulf Cooperation Council citizens, Arab and foreign countries, those whom fulfilled the usual qualification standards for the University to get a seat in the course.
The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center, which is based in Qatar, is considered one of the most prominent organisations in both the region and internationally in the promotion of the rule of law and combatting corruption.
The University of Sussex is known to be a world leader in the field of research and teaching in this area, especially at the Sussex Centre for the Study of Corruption; a research centre in the School of Law, Politics and Sociology.
